The Gambella People's National Regional State Council recently appointed Ms. Alemitu Umod as the new President of the Gambella Regional State. Umod is the first woman to hold the position and brings a wealth of experience to the role, including previous service as Deputy Speaker of the Regional Council and State Minister for Women and Social Affairs. The Gambella Region is rich in natural resources, including land, water, forests, fisheries, and mineral resources. However, the region's residents face many vulnerabilities, including: long-lasting civil conflict, forced migrations, dependence on foreign aid, and asymmetric power relations. The region's population is made up of: 90% Protestants, 5% Orthodox, 3% Muslim, 1% Traditional religions, and 1% Catholic. The capital of the Gambela Region is the city of Gambela, which is also a separate woreda in Ethiopia
